  1. Is Finding Our Way Running in Your Community?

In our August 16th email, we asked for your help in identifying newspapers that are printing Finding Our Way. Given the events of the last few weeks, many editors have understandably postponed inclusion of the series in their newspapers. Therefore, once again we are asking you to get in touch with your newspaper editors to find out if they plan on running all or part of the series and to let us know what you find out. We are tracking the 500 daily newspapers in the country, but there are 5,000 newspapers that publish 6 or fewer times per week and WE CAN ONLY GET INFORMATION ON THEM FROM YOU! Please send us an email at: steeringcommittees@bballard.com
and put “newspapers” in the subject line.
In order to make the information most useful to those who are reporting on your success, please include the following information:

    - Name of newspaper
    - Name and position of newspaper editor or other staff to whom you spoke
    - Email address for the person to whom you spoke or for general inquiries to the paper
    - Whether the newspaper is published daily or weekly
    - The approximate circulation of the newspaper
    - The number of articles from the series (and titles, if known) that they plan to run.

  2. Finding Our Way Materials – Posters now available!!

We are excited to announce that the Finding Our Way posters are now available. If you or your coalition would like to order some of these posters, please email your request to
    findingourway123@aol.com.

Community coalitions across the country are requesting and disseminating Finding Our Way materials with great success! To date we have sent out over 8,400 Community Action Brochures, over 1,400 Newspaper Brochures, and over 1100 Community Action Guides. These materials have reached people in over 46 states and 30 national organizations. Great job everyone!!!

If you would like to distribute some of these materials, please email us at
steeringcommittees@bballard.com with “materials” in the subject field.

  3. Welcome to New Community Coalitions

We would like to welcome two new community coalitions that are new to the outreach effort for Finding Our Way. Welcome, Green Valley, AZ and Providence, RI! We look forward to working with you.

  4. What Are Other Coalitions Doing Around the Series?

We have received emails from many of you informing us of your activities surrounding the Finding Our Way series. Here are a few things some of you are doing around the country.

The local coalition in Murray, KY is working with their NPR member station and encouraging them to run related stories each week during the series.
Aging with Dignity and the local coalition in Tallahassee, FL have gotten their local paper not only to run the series, but to print a companion piece about Five Wishes as well as other local interest stories related to the series.
In October, the Santa Cruz County End-of-Life Coalition will be sponsoring a local Day of the Dead community altar. With their encouragement, a local Girl Scout Troop has created a badge around the Day of the Dead and All Souls. They also are hoping to work with a well-known local dancer to creating a dance event called "Dancing with the Elephant.”
The coalition in Green Valley, AZ is working with the local library to hold a weekly meeting to discuss the Finding Our Way articles. They are contacting local schools, civic organizations, churches and retirement complexes offering panels or speakers following the publication of each article in the series. They have enlisted local doctors, hospice representatives, and other relevant professionals to join the panel discussion.
Sacramento Healthcare Decisions has arranged for the entire series to be translated into Chinese and have secured a commitment from the World Journal (also known as the Chinese Daily News with a national circulation of 350,000) to publish each of the 15 articles in their weekly Sunday magazine. They are also working with a World Journal reporter in the San Francisco Bay area to develop 15 local stories that will be included in the Bay area edition and are developing some programming for Chinese television and radio stations.

Tell us what your coalition has planned around the Finding Our Way series by emailing us at steeringcommittees@bballard.com.

  6. The Complete Paginated FOW Collection Alternative

All 15 articles of the Finding Our Way series are available for publication in a “magazine-like” series reprint. There are two ways this might happen. You can have it printed at the local level in a version that would allow for identification of the local newspaper and accommodate local advertising. The FOW project is also exploring production and distribution of a generic paginated collection that would have no local identifiers. Your community could use pre-printed stickers on this version to acknowledge your local coalition, newspaper, or other funding source.

Healthcare organizations, hospices, and end-of-life coalitions have the opportunity to pursue collaborative agreements with their local newspapers and other organizations to purchase copies of the series in either format. This might be an opportunity for your coalition to find a funding partner.

The locally produced paginated version can allow for either one page or five pages of advertising, which could offset the cost of printing. There is also an opportunity to include a local article, if one was written in conjunction with the series. The creative possibilities are endless. For a minimal investment, this public education and outreach “tool” could be made available in doctors’ offices, hospitals, community forums, libraries, etc.

Finding Our Way is exploring the second possibility, a paginated collection that would be printed in a very large production run and distributed nationwide. If there is sufficient interest in this alternative, we would provide you with copies of this reprint at the lowest possible cost. In order to accomplish this, we need to get an idea of how many of you would be interested in purchasing the paginated reprints and in what quantities. If you believe that your organization or your coalition would be interested, please email us at steeringcommittees@bballard.com with the approximate amount you think you might be interested in purchasing. The subject line of your email should read “reprints.”
